Sedation for Dental Treatments in Edinburgh
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help you stay calm and relaxed during treatment. Depending on your needs and the type of procedure, this may range from mild sedation, where you’re still awake but deeply relaxed, to deeper levels where you may have little memory of the procedure afterwards.
At Inverleith Dentalcare, we offer the option of dental sedation, carried out by an experienced external specialist team. This allows patients who need a little extra reassurance to receive treatment in a calm, comfortable environment – right here in our practice.
With sedation dentistry, you can receive the necessary care while feeling more at ease and comfortable.

The Procedure

Here is how your journey will look like if you choose to opt for sedation:
- Consultation & Assessment: We’ll begin with a thorough consultation to understand your needs and medical history. If sedation is right for you, we’ll arrange for a qualified external sedation specialist to attend your treatment at our practice.
- Treatment Day: On the day of your appointment, your sedation will be administered by the visiting specialist. Throughout your procedure, our team will be by your side, closely monitoring your comfort and safety.
- Aftercare & Recovery: Once your treatment is complete, you’ll rest in the practice until you're ready to leave. As sedation affects your alertness, you’ll need someone to take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

Your Questions Answered
Dental Sedation FAQs
The duration of sedation depends on the type used and your individual response. Light sedation may wear off within a few hours, while deeper sedation may require a longer recovery time. Your dentist will provide specific details based on the sedation method used.
With proper sedation, you should not feel any pain during your procedure. Sedation ensures you are relaxed and comfortable, minimising any discomfort or pain.
You should not drive yourself home after receiving sedation. Arrange for a friend or family member to take you home, as you may still be under the effects of the sedation.
Follow your dentist’s instructions for preparation, which may include fasting for a certain period before the procedure. Arrange for someone to accompany you home after the treatment and avoid heavy meals or alcohol for a few hours post-sedation.
Sedation can be used for a wide range of dental procedures, from routine cleanings to complex surgeries. Your dentist will determine if sedation is appropriate based on the procedure and your personal comfort level.
Depending on the level of sedation, you may not remember the procedure or may have only partial recollection. This is normal and part of the sedation process designed to enhance your comfort.
